How Hearing Coverage Generally Works
Hearing benefits may help with exams, prescription hearing aids, fittings, and follow-up services. The provider network, approved devices, per-ear costs, replacement frequency, and included support are different from one policy to another.
Details Worth Reviewing Before You Enroll
A useful comparison looks beyond the advertised hearing-aid benefit. Review the complete process, the providers and devices available near you, and the services included before and after a fitting.
Whether your preferred audiologist, hearing instrument specialist, or hearing center participates in the required network
Whether an exam, referral, or prior authorization is required before using a device benefit
The benefit amount or copayment for each ear and the available hearing-aid technology levels
How often the hearing-aid benefit renews and whether replacement is limited to specific circumstances
Which fitting, programming, follow-up, repair, warranty, battery, charger, or accessory services are included
Any trial or return period and whether fees are refundable if a device is returned
Whether over-the-counter hearing aids are eligible for benefits or must be purchased separately
Your estimated total cost after the plan benefit, including services or features not covered by the plan
Prescription and Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids Are Not The Same.
FDA-regulated over-the-counter hearing aids are intended for adults age 18 or older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Prescription hearing aids are fitted through a licensed hearing health professional and may be appropriate for people of any age or degree of hearing loss. A policy may cover one type and not the other.
