Common questions about when and how to enroll.
Automatic enrollment often depends on whether you already receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits. Use the sign-up guide to check your situation, then confirm the result with Social Security when needed.
For most people, it is a seven-month period that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after it. Coverage start dates can depend on when you apply.
Some people covered by current employment can delay Part B and use a Special Enrollment Period later. COBRA, retiree coverage, and smaller-employer coverage may work differently, so confirm your rules before delaying.
Social Security handles Medicare enrollment. You can apply online, call Social Security, visit a local office, or use the printable application when it fits your situation.
Not necessarily. COBRA and retiree coverage do not always count the same way as coverage from current employment. Confirm your Medicare enrollment deadline before assuming either option protects you from a gap or penalty.
Act promptly. You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, or you may need to use another enrollment period. Social Security can confirm your eligibility and any possible late-enrollment consequences.
